Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme is intensely practical, focusing on developing hands-on security skills through real-world attack and defence scenarios. You will learn to protect systems and investigate breaches using the University's specialised cyber security facilities and industry-standard tools in a controlled, ethical environment. This applied approach is central to the curriculum and is delivered through:

  • Specialist Cyber Security Lab: You will work in the University's dedicated Cyber Security Laboratory, an isolated environment equipped for safe penetration testing, digital forensics, and malware analysis.

  • Industry-Standard Security Tools: The curriculum involves practical work with professional tools including Wireshark for network analysis, Metasploit for penetration testing, and forensic software like Autopsy and FTK Imager for digital evidence investigation.

  • High-Performance Computing: You will have access to the University's High-Performance Computing cluster for password cracking, cryptographic analysis, and large-scale security simulations.

  • Substantial Individual Project: A core component is a significant research project where you will tackle a substantial cyber security challenge, such as developing a new security tool, conducting an in-depth vulnerability assessment, or investigating a complex cyber crime scenario.

  • Practical, Scenario-Based Modules: Learning is reinforced through hands-on coursework including penetration testing exercises, incident response simulations, and forensic investigations using real-world case studies.
