Program Overview

The MSc Applied Cyber Security at Queen’s University Belfast is a one-year full-time (or two-year part-time) program for graduates or industry professionals with technical or programming backgrounds wanting to specialize in cyber security. Students study modules in cryptography, network security, software assurance, penetration testing and legal/ethical aspects, alongside a substantial research project. 


Curriculum Structure

Students begin with core modules like Foundations of Cyber Security (ELE8071), Network Security & Monitoring (ELE8093), and Software Assurance (ELE8094), giving a solid grounding in threat models, secure coding, monitoring tools and secure development lifecycles.  They also take Cryptography (ELE8090) to understand cryptographic algorithms, and Data, Privacy and the Law (LAW7848) to learn legal/regulatory frameworks impacting cyber security.  After completing taught modules, students undertake an Individual Research Project (ELE8095) which applies their learning to a real-world or cutting-edge cyber security issue, possibly as a summer placement.
