MSc Data Science

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Hertfordshire

Program Overview

Program Overview:
The MSc Data Science at Hertfordshire is a 12-month full-time programme (with placement options) for students from STEM or non-STEM backgrounds who want strong practical & theoretical skills in data. You’ll study statistics, machine learning & neural networks, data visualisation & handling, plus do a major project.

Curriculum Structure:

You begin with foundational modules like Foundations of Data Science, Applied Data Science 1 & 2, Data Handling and Visualisation, Data Mining & Discovery, and Machine Learning & Neural Networks. These develop your ability to manipulate real-world datasets, build predictive models, visualise data, and understand the statistical/math basis of algorithms.

Final Phase (Project):
You then complete the Data Science Project, applying what you’ve learned to a real or simulated problem, combining coding, analysis, validation, and reporting. This consolidates both technical & soft skills.

Focus areas
“Machine Learning; Neural Networks; Data Mining; Data Visualisation; Statistical Foundations; Real-World Project Work”

Learning outcomes
“Ability to process & clean data; build & evaluate ML/neural network models; present findings visually; understand mathematical/statistical underpinnings; execute complete data science project”

Professional alignment (accreditation):
Accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS); placement options included.

Reputation (employability rankings):
Hertfordshire’s Computer Science research had 90% of its output rated world-leading or internationally excellent in REF 2021; graduates are in demand for roles as data scientists, data engineers etc.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This programme focuses on applying modern computing principles to business and information systems challenges. You'll develop practical skills using the University's specialist computing facilities and industry-relevant software, preparing you for professional IT roles. This hands-on approach is delivered through:

  • Specialist Computing Laboratories: Access to LJMU's modern computing labs with high-specification workstations for systems development, database management, and network projects.

  • Industry-Standard Software: Practical work with enterprise systems, database platforms like Oracle and SQL Server, and development tools including Visual Studio and programming languages such as Java and Python.

  • Substantial Individual Project: A major final project where you apply your skills to a substantial computing challenge, developing a sophisticated information systems solution.

  • Professional Development: Project-based learning that simulates real-world business IT environments, focusing on systems analysis, design, and implementation.
