MA Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of York

Program Overview

The MA Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence at the University of York examines foundational, ethical and societal questions posed by AI — such as what intelligence, mind, agency or consciousness mean in the context of machines — rather than focusing on coding or engineering. It suits students with interests in philosophy, ethics, social impact or theory who want to explore the conceptual and moral dimensions of artificial intelligence.

Curriculum Structure:
In the one-year full-time (or two-year part-time) programme, students typically begin with Topics in the Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence, where they investigate core questions about machine consciousness, the nature of intelligence, and differences between human minds and AI systems. Over the course of the year, they choose from a wide range of optional modules (for example courses in ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind or philosophy of science) allowing them to contextualise AI within broader philosophical debates about knowledge, society, morality and information. The year culminates in a substantial Research Project, in which each student undertakes independent research into a philosophical issue related to AI, developing analytic, writing and presentation skills under academic supervision.

Focus areas: “Philosophy of Mind, Ethics of AI, Social and Political Implications of AI, Epistemology and AI, Philosophy of Information, Independent Philosophical Research”

Learning outcomes: “Critically analyse philosophical issues raised by AI; understand and debate ethical, conceptual and social challenges of AI; situate AI within broader philosophical frameworks; conduct independent philosophical research and communicate complex ideas clearly.”

Professional alignment (accreditation): The MA prepares students for further academic study (e.g. PhD) or roles in ethics, policy, technology governance, consultancy or research — especially where deep understanding of AI’s conceptual and societal impacts is needed.

Reputation (employability rankings): The Department of Philosophy at York is recognised among the UK’s top philosophy departments; the MA builds on that reputation, equipping graduates for academic, policy, and ethics-oriented careers with strong critical-thinking and research credentials.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students develop critical analytical skills through structured debates, ethical analysis of real AI case studies, and engagement with interdisciplinary research at the intersection of philosophy and computer science. This applied learning is central to the curriculum:

  • Case Study Analysis: Examination of real-world AI implementations and their societal impacts.

  • Research Project: A substantial dissertation on a philosophical problem in AI.

  • Interdisciplinary Engagement: Collaboration with Computer Science department research.

  • Ethical Frameworks: Development of practical AI ethics guidelines and policy recommendations.

  • Analytical Tools: Training in formal logic and philosophical analysis methods for AI systems.

  • Research Environment: Access to the Department of Philosophy's research clusters and seminars.
