MSc Industrial Biotechnology

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Liverpool John Moores University

Program Overview

The MSc in Industrial Biotechnology at LJMU is designed to give you both the scientific depth and the practical experience needed to thrive in today’s biotechnology sector. It’s a great fit if you’re aiming for a career in industrial research, fermentation, health biotech, or environmental biotechnology and want a programme that connects science directly to real-world industry needs.

Curriculum Structure

First Phase – Core Biotech Training

You begin by building a strong technical foundation. In Advanced Biotechniques, you’ll work hands-on with modern lab technologies used across the biotech industry. Cell Technology teaches you how animal cell cultures are developed and scaled for commercial use. You’ll also study Bioprocessing and Fermentation Technology, where you learn how microbes are used to produce industrial products through controlled fermentation.

Mid Phase – Data, Design & Synthetic Biology

Next, you deepen your analytical and research abilities. Biomolecular Research Skills & Data Analysis helps you interpret scientific data with confidence. In Principles & Applications of Synthetic Biology, you’ll explore how biological systems can be engineered to solve industrial and environmental challenges. Alongside this, Advanced Topics in Biotechnology exposes you to the latest innovations shaping the biotech world.

Final Project – Research or Industry Placement

To complete your degree, you’ll undertake either a research project within the university or a placement project with an external organisation. This is your chance to apply your skills to a real challenge, work independently, and gain experience that looks impressive to future employers.

Focus Areas

"Fermentation & bioprocessing, cell technology, synthetic biology, advanced biotechniques, data analysis, industrial research"

Learning Outcomes

"You will develop advanced laboratory skills, learn how to scale biological processes, analyse complex molecular data, explore synthetic biology solutions, and carry out independent research aligned with industry needs."

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The programme is built around the skill demands of the biotech sector, ensuring you graduate with practical capabilities in fermentation, bioprocess design, commercial cell culture, and synthetic biology — all highly valued by employers in biomanufacturing and industrial research.

LJMU has a strong reputation in bioscience and is known for producing industry-ready graduates. The programme is structured to match the skills employers consistently look for, helping students move smoothly into work or further research after graduation.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At LJMU, this MSc is designed to make you feel like a practicing biotechnologist from day one. You’ll spend a lot of time working inside the university’s specialist Life Sciences laboratories, gaining hands-on experience with real analytical instruments, cell culture systems, fermentation equipment, and modern molecular biology tools. Alongside taught modules, you’ll take part in project-based learning — from short, intensive lab projects to a substantial research or placement project that lets you apply your skills in a real scientific or industrial environment.

Here’s how your learning becomes genuinely practical:

  • Mini Laboratory Projects: Modules such as Bioprocessing and Fermentation Technology and Synthetic Biology include structured, week-long lab projects that help you build confidence with core experimental techniques.

  • 12-Week Independent Research Project: Toward the end of the programme, you’ll complete a supervised research project, which can be carried out either on campus or with an external industry partner — ideal if you’re aiming for workplace experience.

  • Advanced Laboratory Techniques: Through modules like Advanced Biotechniques and Cell Technology, you’ll work directly with sophisticated molecular biology methods and cell culture platforms used across the biotech sector.

  • Scientific Data Analysis: In Biomolecular Research Skills & Data Analysis, you’ll gain experience with statistical tools, scientific writing, and research communication — essential skills for any biotechnology professional.

  • Professional Supervision: If you choose a placement-style project, you’ll be supported not just by university academics but also by an industrial supervisor, helping you connect your academic work to real professional expectations.

Facilities Overview:
The School of Biological and Environmental Sciences provides access to modern laboratories equipped for microbiology, genomics, molecular biology, and advanced imaging, including thermocyclers, sequencing systems, microscopy suites, and environmental analysis equipment.
