MSc (Eng) Advanced Mechanical Engineering

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of Leeds

Program Overview

The MSc (Eng) Advanced Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds is an extended one-year course that advances from mechanical engineering undergraduate study to equip students with the sophisticated knowledge required in today's engineering industry. The course is focused on advanced mechanical system technologies, robotics, automobile engineering, and energy systems and enables graduates to work in leading engineering innovation. The course integrates theoretical study with practical application, and students will gain an appreciation of how to tackle difficult engineering problems in a range of industries.

Curriculum Structure:
The MSc (Eng) Advanced Mechanical Engineering has a wide curriculum, well-structured to provide students with both theoretical and practical learning experiences. The core areas of study are:

  • Core Engineering Subjects: Advanced thermodynamics, computational mechanics, and fluid dynamics are studied in detail.

  • Laboratory and Practice: Curriculum includes practical design exercises, computer-aided engineering simulations, and system analysis exercises.

  • Elective Modules: Students have the opportunity to individualize their studies by selecting electives in robotics, intelligent materials, and nanotechnology.

  • Capstone Project: Students, in the last phase, undertake a project that compels them to tackle real-life issues, often with industry sponsors, and helps prepare them for professional careers as engineering researchers and developers.

Accreditation:
The course is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), allowing students to progress towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. The accreditation provides assurance that the course meets the highest standard within the engineering profession.

Campus Location:
The University of Leeds is based in the heart of Leeds, one of the UK's leading technology and engineering cities, providing students with access to the best level of academic and industry facilities.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The University of Leeds offers many experiential learning opportunities to make sure that students are able to apply their learned skills into practical environments:

  • Industrial Placements: The program has strong industry links, with students often doing placements or projects with leading companies in a wide range of sectors including automotive, aerospace, and energy.

  • Research Opportunities: Students can participate in cutting-edge research projects, working under the guidance of faculty and industry experts on innovative engineering projects.

  • Student Competitions: Students are encouraged to engage in engineering competitions, i.e., the Formula Student race car engineering project, that foster team spirit and hands-on problem-solving skills.

  • Industry Partnerships: The University has close association with companies like Rolls-Royce, Siemens, and Bosch, exposing students to industry knowledge and professional experience.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Once they graduate with the MSc, students are well positioned to embark on successful careers in a variety of engineering fields. The University of Leeds offers comprehensive career advice, including:

  • Career Advice: Students are assigned a personal career advisor who guides them on job hunting, CV writing, and interviewing.

  • Networking Opportunities: The university hosts career fairs and employer visits, which enable students to network with top companies in the engineering field.

  • Further Studies: The students can further go on to gain their doctoral studies by undertaking PhDs in further advanced mechanical engineering, energy systems, or robotics.

  • Job Market: Alumni are highly job-sought and secure jobs with major engineering firms, R&D research labs, and consulting firms.
