Curriculum Structure

Block 1: Introduction to Practical Investigative Journalism and Media Law

Students are introduced to essential investigative skills, including camera operation, digital editing, and sound recording. The module also covers media law, political structures, regulatory codes, and ethical issues impacting investigative journalism.

Block 2: Investigative Journalism: Skills and Theory

This block focuses on specialized journalism techniques such as financial journalism and open-source research. Students also explore the role of journalism in global current affairs and develop skills in news values, storytelling, and audience targeting.

Block 3: Advanced Practical Investigative Journalism

Building on previous skills, students engage in advanced filming techniques, data journalism, shorthand, and investigative podcasting. A two-week work placement at an independent TV production company provides real-world experience.

Block 4: Investigative Journalism: Global Perspectives and Industry

This block enhances industry knowledge through workshops and guest lectures from media practitioners and careers advisers, focusing on early career development and global industry insights.

Block 5: Investigative Journalism Project

As the culmination of the MA, students independently produce a 10–15-minute investigative piece suitable for broadcast, accompanied by other audio-visual content and critical analysis. De
