International MBA - MBA

12 Months On Campus Masters Program

Birmingham City University

Program Overview

BCU’s International MBA is designed for ambitious students who want to understand how businesses operate on a global stage and grow into confident, strategic leaders. It combines practical learning, industry-focused teaching, and international business insights to help you build the skills employers look for worldwide.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 (Taught Modules)
Your year begins with a deep dive into the core areas of global business. Through modules like Global Marketing Management, Managerial Finance, Global Operations Management, and Strategic Human Resource Management, you’ll learn how international companies attract customers, manage money, coordinate operations, and lead diverse teams. These modules help you build a strong, well-rounded understanding of how global organisations function.

As you progress, the focus shifts toward higher-level strategic thinking. In Strategic Management and Leadership and Entrepreneurship and Innovation, you’ll explore how leaders make long-term decisions, navigate change, and create new business opportunities. These classes encourage you to think creatively and grow your leadership confidence.

You’ll finish the academic year with a Business and Management Research Project, where you investigate a real business issue that interests you. It’s your chance to pull everything together—research, analysis, strategy—and present insights that reflect what you’ve learned throughout the programme.

Optional Professional Placement
After your taught modules, you can choose a 20-week professional work placement. This gives you hands-on experience with an employer, helping you build your CV, apply your skills in real business situations, and expand your professional network in the UK.

Focus areas
“International strategy and leadership, global marketing and operations, finance and international HR management, entrepreneurship and innovation, and global business research.”

Learning outcomes
“Strategic thinking and decision-making in global markets; strong analytical and leadership abilities; ability to manage people and operations across cultures; advanced communication and research skills; readiness for management roles in international organisations.”

Professional alignment (accreditation)
This is a postgraduate MBA awarded by Birmingham City University. It’s designed for both new graduates and early-career professionals, with entry available to those holding a 2:2 degree (or equivalent) or a recognised graduate-level qualification.

Reputation (employability rankings)
BCU places a strong emphasis on real-world employability, with teaching led by staff who bring industry experience into the classroom. The programme includes field trips, practical learning, and the option for a work placement — contributing to strong student satisfaction, with 91% of students reporting they were satisfied (PTES 2025).

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

What makes the International MBA at BCU stand out is how much of your learning happens through real experiences, not just classroom theory. From access to modern business-school facilities to hands-on company projects and optional work placements, the programme is built to help you think and act like a global business professional. You’ll work with real data, collaborate with international classmates, and step into environments that mirror what you’ll experience in industry.

Here’s how that practical learning turns into real career readiness:

  • 20-week professional placement option — You can choose a full placement after your academic modules, giving you hands-on experience with an employer and a strong addition to your CV.

  • Up to 12-week in-company project — If you prefer a shorter industry experience, you can complete a company-based project anywhere in the world, ideal for testing your ideas in a real business setting.

  • Business field trips — The programme includes visits to companies, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at how organisations operate and make strategic decisions.

  • Collaborative group work with a global cohort — Because your classmates come from different countries and industries, almost every group activity becomes real training in cross-cultural collaboration — a key skill for international management.

  • Curzon Building facilities — You’ll study in BCU’s flagship city-centre building, home to modern computer labs, breakout spaces, and technology-supported classrooms designed for business learning.

  • Access to specialist tools and software — MBA students have access to digital tools such as SPSS, NVivo, and the full Microsoft Office 365 suite, supporting everything from research projects to data analysis.

  • Practical academic project — Your Business and Management Research Project lets you explore a real business issue in depth, applying research methods and strategic thinking to produce solutions grounded in evidence.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Graduates from BCU’s International MBA step confidently into roles that require leadership, strategic thinking, and a global business perspective. The programme prepares you to take on responsibilities in international companies, growing industries, or even your own entrepreneurial ventures. Many students move into positions such as International Business Manager, Global Marketing Manager, Operations Manager, or Strategy Consultant, depending on their interests and experience.

And BCU gives you strong, practical support along the way:

  • Personalised employability support — Throughout your studies, BCU’s Careers and Student Opportunities team helps you refine your CV, practice interviews, sharpen presentation skills, and prepare for real employer expectations.

  • Meaningful industry experience — You can complete a 20-week professional placement, or take on an in-company project for up to 12 weeks, giving you real business exposure and industry connections before you graduate.

  • Modern business-focused facilities — From SPSS and NVivo to the full Microsoft Office 365 suite, plus access to the Curzon Building’s specialist spaces, you’ll be working with tools and facilities that employers expect graduates to know.

  • Strong entrepreneurial pathway — If you’re thinking about starting a business, the programme encourages innovation, and graduates can apply for support through BCU’s business-start environments and incubator resources.

  • Internationally relevant skillset — Because the MBA blends finance, marketing, strategy, HR and global operations — and your classmates come from around the world — you graduate ready for cross-border roles and multinational employers.

Further Academic Progression:
If you choose to continue studying after the MBA, you can progress into advanced research-based degrees such as a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) or a PhD in Business/Management, building on the research and analytical skills you develop during your Business and Management Research Project.
