Curriculum Structure: In Year 1, students are introduced to core midwifery care, studying essential modules like Public Health in Midwifery 1, Midwifery Practice 1: Core Skills, and Anatomy and Physiology for Midwives. This year emphasizes understanding the biological changes during pregnancy and developing foundational midwifery skills through both theory and practice.
Year 2 expands on care provision with modules such as Midwifery Practice 3: Childbirth Emergencies and Childbearing and Neonatal Complexities, focusing on managing complications and enhancing communication skills for diverse maternal and neonatal health scenarios. Students engage deeply in clinical placements to integrate theory with real-world experiences.
In Year 3, students refine their clinical and leadership abilities through courses like Midwifery Practice 5: Implementing Caseloading and Philosophy for Midwifery Practice. This stage prepares students to deliver woman-centred care, manage caseloads, and embrace professional roles with autonomy and reflective practice.
At Oxford Brookes, hands-on learning is central to your midwifery education. From early in the program, you will gain practical skills in state-of-the-art clinical skills suites, honing your abilities on highly realistic simulation manikins like SimMan and SimBaby which mimic real-life patient responses. You’ll quickly move into clinical placements within Oxfordshire, practicing alongside registered midwives at facilities including the Women’s Centre at John Radcliffe Hospital and various community and midwife-led units. This balanced approach between simulated and real-world experiences ensures you develop confidence and competence in maternity care.
