MSc Midwifery (Shortened)

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Plymouth

Program Overview

This program offers registered adult nurses with a relevant degree the opportunity to qualify as midwives at master’s level. It is designed to equip students with the clinical skills, knowledge, and professional confidence necessary to provide personalized midwifery care that promotes continuity and choice for women and families.

Curriculum Structure:

In the first year, students undergo an individual learning needs assessment and develop essential midwifery knowledge and skills through modules such as Developing Midwifery Practice, Reproductive Health and Pregnancy, and Physiological Childbirth and Additional Needs. This year balances theory with 50% clinical placements in local maternity units across the South West of England, offering hands-on experience under supervision.

The second year advances clinical competence with modules like Advancing Midwifery Practice, Complexity in Midwifery (1 and 2), and includes a research or practice development project. This phase targets managing complex clinical situations, leadership skills, and evidence-based midwifery practice preparation for autonomous professional roles.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

This program provides a rich blend of theoretical learning and extensive clinical experience, ensuring students develop the practical skills necessary for professional midwifery practice. Students undertake 50% of their time in clinical placements across diverse maternity settings including hospitals, birth centres, community clinics, and patients’ homes within the South West of England. The University supports practical learning with access to advanced simulation facilities, interprofessional learning environments, and comprehensive digital resources. Collaboration across health disciplines fosters teamwork and communication, mirroring real-world healthcare settings.

Experiential learning includes:

• Clinical placements spread throughout maternity units, birth centres, GP surgeries, children’s centres, and home visits supervised by qualified midwives.

• Training in community and hospital settings covering antenatal care, labour and birth management, postnatal care, neonatal examination, and breastfeeding support.

• Use of simulation suites and virtual learning platforms to practice clinical skills in realistic scenarios.
