Program Overview

The Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) at the University of Hertfordshire is a professional, accredited program designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience required to become a registered pharmacist. The course combines rigorous scientific study with clinical and professional training, providing students with a deep understanding of pharmacology, pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry, and pharmacy practice. Students learn how medicines are discovered, formulated, and delivered, while also gaining essential knowledge of human physiology, pathology, and therapeutics. The program emphasizes patient-centered care, ethical decision-making, and professional standards, ensuring graduates can provide safe, effective, and evidence-based healthcare. With a blend of classroom learning, laboratory work, and clinical exposure, students are prepared to meet the evolving demands of healthcare and pharmacy practice in both community and hospital settings.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Hands-on practical experience is a core component of the MPharm program. Students gain training in state-of-the-art laboratories, where they learn compounding, analytical techniques, and formulation testing. Clinical placements in community pharmacies, hospitals, and GP surgeries provide invaluable real-world exposure, allowing students to develop skills in patient counseling, prescription validation, and interprofessional collaboration. Research projects are integrated into the curriculum, giving students opportunities to investigate contemporary topics such as drug delivery systems, antimicrobial resistance, and personalized medicine. Problem-based learning, case studies, and simulations further develop critical thinking, communication, and decision-making skills, ensuring graduates are not only knowledgeable but also capable of applying their learning in professional settings.

Progression & Future Opportunities

Upon successful completion, graduates are eligible to undertake the pre-registration foundation training year and register as professional pharmacists. Career pathways include community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical industry roles, regulatory affairs, and research. Graduates may also pursue postgraduate study, including MSc or PhD programs in pharmaceutical sciences, clinical pharmacy, or drug development. The program equips students with transferable skills such as problem-solving, analytical thinking, and teamwork, making them highly adaptable professionals ready to meet the challenges of modern healthcare and pharmaceutical innovation.
