Plant Science and Biotechnology MSc

12 Months On Campus Masters Program

University of Leeds

Program Overview

If you’re curious about how plants can help solve global challenges like food security and sustainability, this MSc is designed for you. It combines modern plant biology with practical biotechnology, giving you the skills to analyse genes, engineer crops, and explore innovative plant-based solutions for the future.

Curriculum Structure

In the first semester, you’ll get hands-on with Practical Bioinformatics, learning to analyse genetic sequences and work with real-world bioinformatics tools. At the same time, Research Planning & Scientific Communication equips you with the skills to read scientific literature, write proposals, and communicate your findings clearly. You’ll also study Sustainable Crop Production, which dives into climate-resilient farming and global agricultural challenges.

During semester two, you’ll move into Advanced Biomolecular Technologies, where techniques like PCR, cloning, and protein analysis come alive in the lab. The Protein Engineering Laboratory Project gives you hands-on experience, while Crop Science & Plant Biotechnology shows how genome engineering and modern breeding can create sustainable crops for tomorrow.

In semester three, the spotlight is on your Master’s Research Project. You’ll design and carry out experiments on a topic of your choice—whether it’s plant cell biology, stress response, or bioengineering—while being guided by experts from the Centre for Plant Sciences. This is your chance to explore an area you’re passionate about and make a real contribution to research.

Focus areas: molecular plant biology, bioinformatics, protein engineering, sustainable agriculture, biotechnology

Learning outcomes: gain practical skills in plant molecular techniques, analyse genomic and proteomic data, engineer biological systems, and complete an independent research project

Professional alignment (accreditation): the course is taught by research-active experts from the Centre for Plant Sciences and is closely aligned with industry and academic requirements, preparing you for biotech and agricultural careers

Reputation (employability): Leeds is well-known for its research in plant science, and around 70% of graduates are employed within 15 months, with 85% in highly skilled roles

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Leeds, this MSc isn’t just about lectures — it’s about rolling up your sleeves and diving into real, hands-on plant science. From day one, you’ll get practical experience in modern labs and growth facilities, using advanced tools to explore plant biology and biotechnology in ways that connect directly to real-world challenges. You’ll be guided by leading academics from the Centre for Plant Sciences, gaining both technical expertise and the critical thinking skills that make a scientist confident and innovative.

Your practical learning journey includes:
