The MA in International Development at Warwick is designed for curious, motivated students who want to make a real difference in the world. You’ll explore how societies develop, tackle inequality, and design solutions for global challenges, all while learning directly from experts who are shaping the field today.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1 (Full‑Time)
This one-year full-time program (or two years part-time) immerses you in both theory and practice. You’ll start with Thinking Critically About Development – Knowledge, Theories and Frameworks, where you examine different ways of understanding development and the politics behind it. Then, in Development in Policy and Practice – Issues, Approaches and Skills, you’ll learn to connect theory with action, gaining hands-on skills in policy analysis and project planning. The programme also includes a Dissertation, giving you the chance to explore a topic you’re passionate about and develop your independent research skills. On top of that, you can choose optional modules like Transitional Justice and International Development, Citizenship, Migration & Cultural Diversity, or East Asian Development Models, so you can tailor the course to your own interests and career goals.
Focus Areas
Global governance, inequality and justice, sustainability, policy-making, institutional development, and the historical roots of development challenges.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to think critically about development issues, design and evaluate policies, produce professional-level policy briefs, and carry out independent research with confidence.
