MSc International Development

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Keele University

Program Overview

The MSc International Development at Keele University immerses you in the heart of global issues, focusing on inequality, sustainable development and the interplay between environment, conflict and society through cutting-edge research and real-world case studies. It’s ideal for students passionate about making a tangible impact in international organisations, policy sectors, NGOs and governments, equipping you with critical analytical and research skills to address complex global challenges.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 (Full-Time / Core Experience)

In your first year, you build a strong foundation through compulsory core modules that deepen your understanding of international development theory and practice. You’ll start with Research in Action, where you learn how to design and execute rigorous empirical research, and explore International Development: Environment and Conflict, which examines how environmental change and security dynamics shape development outcomes. Alongside these, Advanced Approaches to Politics and International Relations sharpens your ability to critically assess theories and debates that frame global development challenges.

Year 1 (Spring–Summer: Dissertation Focus)

As you move into the latter part of your course, you undertake a Masters Dissertation — a 15,000-word research project tailored to your specific interests within international development. This capstone project allows you to apply the methods and insights you’ve learnt to a real substantive question, showing your capacity for independent research and deep analysis. You’ll also choose a range of optional modules that let you personalise your learning, drawing on specialisms that match your career aspirations.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

At Keele University, the MSc International Development isn’t just about lectures — it’s where your academic learning actively connects with real research practice and critical thinking. From day one, you’ll develop practical research skills through dedicated modules like Research in Action, which trains you in methods used by professional social scientists, and your Masters Dissertation, where you independently design and carry out a substantial research project under expert supervision. The programme draws on Keele’s strong research culture in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, giving you access to a vibrant academic community and resources that support your growth as a researcher.  Plus, Keele’s campus facilities — including the Scott Library for group and independent study — help you deepen your understanding with rich academic materials and collaborative spaces.

Here’s what that looks like in action:

  • Dedicated Research Training: Core modules like Research in Action equip you with hands-on research design, data gathering, and analytical skills that you use throughout your degree, not just sit through.

  • Independent Dissertation Project: Your Masters Dissertation lets you apply theory to a real research question of your choosing, supported by regular supervision from academic experts.

  • Interactive Seminars & Group Work: Small-group discussions, seminars and modules such as Advanced Approaches to Politics and International Relations sharpen your communication, teamwork, and critical thinking in active learning settings.

  • Access to University Research Community: Keele’s reputation for postgraduate research excellence (Top 10 UK for research opportunities) means you’re part of a thriving academic environment with seminars, workshops, and access to cross-discipline expertise.

  • Library and Study Resources: Facilities like the Scott Library provide vast collections of books, journals, and digital resources, plus group study spaces to collaborate with peers on assignments and research.
