Program Overview

This Masters in Political Communication is designed to give you an advanced understanding of the interplay between politics, the media, civil society, and public opinion. The programme will help you understand how information flows and influences contemporary societies, domestically and internationally, across diverse platforms and systems, and it is excellent preparation for careers in politics, journalism, strategic communication, diplomacy and related fields. The MSc is offered as a 12-month full-time or 24-month part-time programme.

 

Curriculum structure: In Year 1 you will take three core courses—Media And Democracy; Political Institutions And Communication; Research Design for Politics and International Relations—and choose three optional courses from a range that varies slightly from year to year, such as Media and Conflict in Divided Societies; Media, War and Security; Propaganda and Public Diplomacy: Authoritarian States; The Internet and Civil Society. MSc students also write a dissertation over the summer months under the supervision of a specialist staff.

Focus areas: Learning outcomes: You will develop an advanced understanding of the power relationships between media and politics, and you will build transferable skills including critical thinking, evidence-based argumentation, case analysis, and policy-oriented writing.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students gain practical skills through a strong emphasis on practice-based learning, with activities that connect theory to real-world issues. The programme features opportunities to network with alumni, attend high-profile talks, and engage with industry professionals through the John Smith Centre, bringing practitioners into the classroom. You will also benefit from the School’s speaker series and regular informal events, and from a diverse, international cohort that sharpens presentation and teamwork skills.

Graduates of this programme gain an advanced understanding of the connection between politics, media, civil society and public opinion, preparing you for a career across global landscapes. Past graduates have gone on to work for political parties, campaign groups, non-profit organisations, civil service, journalism, business, academia, public relations and government from a local to national level. Some alumni have also pursued academia, studying PhDs at the University of Glasgow and other leading universities around the world.
