In an era marked by increasing debates surrounding global challenges such as the environment, peace and security, health and human rights, and sustainable development, our MA International Relations program aims to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of both the problems and potential solutions faced by the international community, both in theory and practice.
While traditional international relations theory often focuses on the nation state as the primary level of analysis, this program encourages students to adopt a bottom-up approach that recognizes the agency, identity, and resistance of individuals and their lived experiences. By doing so, students will be prompted to view international relations through a decolonial lens.
This program strikes a balance between traditional international relations theory, case studies, and literature, and a critical approach that deconstructs the intricate relationships between power, conflict, identity, and globalization. Core modules will cover the historical and theoretical foundations of international relations, while also introducing key research methods to support students in their final dissertation. These modules will bridge the gap between theory and practice through experiential learning and the application of global case studies.
Furthermore, optional modules offer a range of interdisciplinary subjects that highlight the diverse challenges relevant to the field of international relations today. These optional modules draw insights from criminology, sociology, and human rights, and explore topics such as environmental issues, migration and transnationalism, genocide, international crises, and legal and illegal economies. By engaging with these modules, students gain a broader perspective on the multidimensional nature of international relations and the complex dynamics at play.
Typically, applicants are expected to possess at least a second-class honours degree (although certain programs may require a 2:1) from a recognized university in the UK or abroad. For guidance on degree recognition, prospective students can seek advice from the Admissions Office. Individuals without a degree but with relevant professional qualifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by the Program Conveners, whose contact information can be found on the program's respective page. Applicants are required to apply and enroll for the full master's degree. Even those with a third-class honours degree are encouraged to submit an application, as we take into consideration the broader circumstances of each applicant when making our decision. 6.5 overall with a minimum 5.5 in each component.
