MSc Psychology in Education

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Cardiff Metropolitan University Cyncoed Campus

Program Overview

Program Overview:
The MSc Psychology in Education at Cardiff Metropolitan University combines psychological theory with educational practice to understand learning, development, and wellbeing in schools. It suits students from any background (even without prior psychology training) who want to apply psychological insight to education, or those with psychology degrees aiming to specialise in education contexts.

Curriculum Structure
Students start by studying Individual Development, examining social, emotional and cognitive growth and how attachment, language and literacy shape early development. Next, Neuroeducation explores how neuroscience and learning theory inform teaching practices, neurodiversity, and educational policy. In Teaching & Learning, they learn about memory, motivation, emotion and metacognition — and how these influence effective instruction and classroom dynamics. Human Behaviour in Education covers social psychology in schools: identity, culture, relationships, classroom climate, and effects of media and wellbeing. They also study Mental Health & Well-being, understanding risk, resilience and frameworks for supporting mental health in children and adolescents.

Focus areas (string):
“Child development, neuroeducation, learning & teaching psychology, school behaviour & wellbeing, educational mental health, applied educational research.”

Learning outcomes (in a string):
“Apply psychological concepts to education; understand cognitive and developmental processes; assess mental health and wellbeing in school contexts; conduct rigorous mixed-methods research in educational settings; prepare for careers in education, counselling, research or further psychology training.”

Professional alignment (accreditation):
The programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), providing a conversion route to GBC for non-psychology graduates.

Reputation (employability):
Graduates gain transferable skills — in research, communication, analysis and educational psychology — valued in teaching, school support, mental-health services, educational research, and further professional/doctoral training.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)
