1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Keele University

Program Overview

The MSc Psychological Research Methods at Keele University provides in-depth training in both quantitative and qualitative research designs, advanced analysis, and real-world application through placements. It is ideal for students aiming for PhD study, careers as professional researchers, or policy and organisational roles where rigorous evidence is needed.

Curriculum structure:

  • Year 1 (or Term 1): In Applied Psychological Research Methods (30 credits), students develop a critical understanding of quantitative vs qualitative research philosophies, learn data collection strategies, and interpret findings.
In Advancing Research: Computational Modelling, Statistics & Open Science (30 credits), they explore machine learning, Bayesian analysis, cognitive modelling, reproducibility, and programming in MATLAB and JASP.  Through Using Evidence-Based Approaches to Change Practice Across the Lifespan (30 credits), learners work on real policy case studies, write policy briefs and engage in action research to translate research into practice.

  • Dissertation / Research Project: The Applied Research Dissertation (60 credits) allows students to design, conduct, analyse, and present an original empirical study, applying all the research methods learned.

Focus areas
“advanced quantitative & qualitative methods; computational modelling; open science; policy & action research; applied placement”

Learning outcomes
“master sophisticated research designs; perform Bayesian and machine-learning analyses; apply open science practices; translate evidence into policy or organisational interventions; lead independent empirical research”

Professional alignment
While not a practitioner psychology qualification, this MSc strongly aligns with PhD training and professional research careers, and includes a placement to provide hands-on research experience.

Reputation
Keele’s School of Psychology is research-active and this programme equips students for careers in academia, consultancy, governmental and public-policy roles; many graduates go on to PhD or evidence-based research careers.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

Students develop advanced research skills through hands-on projects using Keele's specialist facilities, including the EEG Laboratory and cognitive research equipment. This practical training is delivered through:

  • EEG Laboratory: Access to advanced electroencephalography equipment

  • Research Project: A substantial empirical dissertation using advanced methodologies

  • Software Training: Proficiency in SPSS, R, MATLAB, and experimental design platforms

  • Technical Equipment: Hands-on experience with eye-tracking and cognitive assessment tools

  • Methodology Training: Practical instruction in both quantitative and qualitative research methods

Progression & Future Opportunities

expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, preparing them for roles such as Research Scientist, Data Analyst, Academic Researcher, and Clinical Trial Coordinator. This program equips students with essential skills for designing, conducting, and analysing psychological research across various applied and academic settings.
