In this course, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the psychological research that forms the foundation of forensic psychology practice.

Experienced psychologists who have worked in various forensic and forensic mental health settings, as well as specialized researchers in forensic or forensic mental health, will deliver the course. They will draw upon their expertise to enrich your learning experience by incorporating numerous examples of clinical practice and teaching based on research.

The course begins with a critical and theoretical introduction to forensic psychology, including the development and context of research in this field and its practical applications. You will then delve into the practice of forensic psychology, including the responsibilities of a forensic psychologist.

We will assist you in developing your comprehension of the approaches and techniques employed when working with forensic populations, as well as the research methods necessary for conducting psychological investigations and applying them to research projects in forensic settings.

Additionally, you will complete a supervised research project in an area relevant to Forensic Psychology.

Due to its strong emphasis on practical application in forensic contexts, this postgraduate degree provides excellent preparation for careers in psychology within prisons and similar environments.

An undergraduate degree, either a BA or BSc, with a satisfactory grade (typically 2:2 or higher), in a related field is desirable. In cases where the formal academic entry requirements are not met, you may be required to complete a pre-course assessment task.

Regarding English language proficiency, the minimum entry requirements are an IELTS Academic score of 6.0, with no sub-score lower than 5.5, or an equivalent qualification.

You will gain significant advantages from our well-established connections within the industry, which include prisons across the UK. These connections will provide you with opportunities to volunteer in relevant professional environments, ensuring that you graduate with the knowledge, practical skills, and experience necessary to embark on a career as a forensic psychology trainee.

If you are already working in the field, this course will enable you to enhance both your theoretical and practical understanding, ultimately leading to qualification as a forensic psychologist and instilling the confidence to advance in your career.

The subsequent step involves completing approved applied training, such as the BPS-provided Qualification in Forensic Psychology. While the Prison Service is the largest employer of forensic psychologists, there are also opportunities available within the broader Criminal Justice System, the Home Office, the NHS (in special hospitals and rehabilitation units), the police, and social services. Alternatively, graduates may choose to pursue a career in academia and research, including the possibility of progressing to doctoral (PhD) studies.
