MSc Psychological Wellbeing in Clinical Practice

1 Year On Campus Masters Program

Manchester Metropolitan University

Program Overview

The MSc Mental Health & Wellbeing in Practice at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) develops students’ applied clinical skills, theoretical understanding, and reflective practice in psychological wellbeing settings. It is ideal for mental health professionals—such as nurses, social workers or allied health staff—or psychology graduates who want hands-on experience and a pathway toward practitioner roles.

Curriculum structure:
Since this is a taught master’s (typically 1 year full-time), students learn via a mix of academic teaching, professional practice, and a placement component.

They study Brief Intervention, Core Therapeutic Principles, and Clinical Skills, building their ability to assess, formulate, design, and evaluate psychological interventions. Through Psychological Wellbeing in Practice and Professional Practice Values, learners reflect on practitioner wellbeing, ethics, and person-centred care.

  • In Research Principles & Methods, students gain rigorous research training.

  • Finally, they complete a Service-based Dissertation / Innovation Project, applying their learning in a real workplace and evaluating service delivery or developing a new practice.

Focus areas:
“clinical intervention; practitioner wellbeing; reflective practice; applied research; service-based learning”

Learning outcomes:
“develop advanced assessment, formulation and intervention skills; integrate evidence-based therapeutic approaches; conduct applied research in real-world settings; and nurture reflective, ethical, and resilient professional practice.”

Professional alignment (accreditation):
This MSc supports development of core clinical competencies and values relevant for practitioner roles, but it is not a BPS-accredited “Stage 1” psychology qualification.

Reputation (employability):
MMU is recognized for its applied psychology training and its postgraduate programmes prepare students for roles within mental health services. According to WhatUni, student satisfaction for this course is high.
