MSc Research in Clinical Psychology

The MSc Research in Clinical Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire is a one-year (or two-year part-time) research-focused degree designed to deepen knowledge of psychopathology, psychological assessment, and interventions. It is suited primarily for students aiming to apply for a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or pursue a PhD/research career in clinical psychology. 

Curriculum Structure:
In the programme, students first undertake Research Methods and Data Analysis in Clinical Psychology, gaining competence in complex research designs, advanced statistics, and mixed-methods analysis. Concurrently, they study Psychopathology, learning theoretical and empirical models of mental disorders, and complete the Research Internship in Clinical Psychology, where they work alongside senior researchers in a clinical research environment. In later semesters, the module Psychological Interventions helps students understand evidence-based therapies, while Psychological Assessment trains them in clinical assessment tools, and Professional Clinical Skills I introduces practical competencies such as client communication and ethical practice. The year culminates in a major Research Project in Clinical Psychology, a 60-credit independent dissertation under supervision.

Learning outcomes:

Professional alignment (accreditation):
This MSc does not replace a professional doctorate in clinical psychology or grant a chartered psychologist qualification, but it strengthens applications for doctoral training and research roles.

Herts reports that graduates have gone on to work as wellbeing practitioners, social workers, or SEN teachers, and many progress to PhD study or doctoral clinical training.
