Public Policy MSc

12 Months On Campus Masters Program

University of Glasgow

Program Overview

The MSc in Public Policy at the University of Glasgow is designed to develop future leaders who can shape and evaluate policy responses to real-world societal challenges, from social justice and health to economic development and sustainability. You will learn how public policy is formed, analysed, and implemented in political and organisational contexts, gaining versatile skills that make you effective across government, NGOs, and international organisations.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1 (Core and Foundations)
In the first autumn and spring semesters, you will build a strong foundation in key policy concepts and research methods through modules like Evidence, Evaluation and Policy, Researching Public Policy, and Understanding Public Policy. These core courses will help you develop critical thinking, evidence-based analysis, and practical frameworks that professional policymakers rely on. You will also begin selecting optional classes that match your interests, such as Data and AI in Policy and Society or Global Urban Challenges, further shaping your perspective on policy in action.

Year 1 (Pathway Exploration and Optional Modules)
As the programme progresses, you will deepen your expertise through one of three specialised pathways: General, Sustainability, or Data Analytics. For example, if you choose the Sustainability Pathway, you will study Sustainable Urban Futures and may explore Planning for Just Transitions or Sustainable Energy Landscapes to understand how policy intersects with environmental and social justice goals. If your focus is Data Analytics, courses like Quantitative Data Analysis and Programming Tools for Urban Analytics equip you to use data responsibly to guide strategic decisions.

Summer Dissertation Project
In the final stage, you will complete an independent dissertation on a topic of your choice, supported by a supervisor. This is your opportunity to conduct in-depth research that reflects your interests, whether that is climate policy, urban planning, health policy, or data-driven governance, and to demonstrate the analytical and communication skills you have developed throughout the programme.

Focus Areas

Public policy theory and practice, evidence-based analysis, policy evaluation, data analytics in policy, sustainability, and socio-economic challenges.

Learning Outcomes

By graduation, you will have developed independent critical thinking, rigorous research skills, and the ability to assess and shape policies in diverse organisational environments, with expertise in specialised pathways such as sustainability or data analytics.

Professional Alignment

This programme prepares you for roles in national and local government, NGOs, consultancy firms, international organisations, or the third sector. The dissertation and coursework are closely aligned with employer expectations in policy analysis, evaluation, and planning.
