Screenwriting: Feature Film and Continuing Series MA

18 Months On Campus Masters Program

Leeds Beckett University

Program Overview

The MA Screenwriting at Leeds Beckett is an 18‑month, full‑time master’s designed to help you develop your creative voice and professional writing skills for film and television. Through a mix of workshops, seminars, and one‑on‑one mentoring by practising screenwriters, the course prepares you to write feature films, TV episodes or continuing series — and build a portfolio ready for the screenwriting industry.

Curriculum structure:

  • Throughout the 18‑month course
You’ll start by building a strong foundation in screenwriting fundamentals: the course covers key concepts such as storytelling, genre, structure — helping you understand how different screen media work (feature films, serial TV, etc.).
Alongside lectures and seminars, you’ll be regularly writing: short scripts, treatments, and other writing exercises, receiving feedback from tutors and peers to refine your style.
As you progress, you’ll work on a substantial final project under the guidance of a mentor — this replicates professional practice: you develop a script (feature film or TV episode/series) responding to feedback and industry standards, ready to pitch or present to potential producers/agents.

Focus areas: Feature film writing, television & continuing‑series writing, screenplay development, story structure and genre, professional screenwriting practice, portfolio development, industry standards and pitching, and screenwriting for a variety of media platforms.

Learning outcomes: Graduates will be able to conceive original ideas and translate them into professionally structured screenplays; understand how to work within different genres and media formats; collaborate and respond to feedback in a writers’ room‑style setup; and graduate with a ready‑to‑show portfolio of scripts to present to industry professionals, giving a strong foundation to start a career as a screenwriter, script editor or developer.

Professional alignment (industry relevance): The programme is delivered through the Northern Film School (within Leeds Beckett), whose staff are active screenwriters and industry practitioners — plus the course has strong links to film/TV organisations and networks such as Screen Yorkshire, BFI Hub and other UK‑based media companies, offering opportunities to build professional contacts while studying.

Reputation (employability & outcomes): On graduating you’ll have a substantial body of creative work and a screenwriting portfolio — positioning you for roles not only as a screenwriter, but also as a script editor, story‑liner, or developer for film, TV or digital media. The industry‑oriented nature of the course and exposure to working professionals helps boost your employability in competitive creative sectors.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

When you join MA Screenwriting at Leeds Beckett, you’ll be part of a vibrant film‑school community — not isolated in literary theory. From day one you work on actual writing projects, generate ideas, and build a professional‑standard writing portfolio under the guidance of practising screenwriters.

Here’s how your experiential learning will unfold at Leeds Beckett:

  • Writing projects for film & TV — building a professional portfolio: Throughout the course you’ll write scripts (feature film, series, etc.), as well as exercises and assignments designed to help you discover and refine your voice as a screenwriter. The aim is to graduate with a portfolio of original, screen‑ready work.Workshops, seminars, tutorials — learning from industry‑active professionals: The course is taught by practising screenwriters; you’ll get feedback from tutors with real industry experience, and benefit from guest talks and tutorials reflecting current industry standards and expectations. Collaboration and peer feedback within a film‑school environment: Because the Screenwriting MA is based in Northern Film School and runs alongside other filmmaking courses (fiction, documentary, cinematography, etc.), you’ll have opportunities to collaborate with students making films — which helps you see how writing works in context of real production.

  • Industry‑orientation: pitching, professional context & self‑promotion training: A module called “Writing for an Industry Context” helps you think beyond writing — how to present yourself as a freelance writer, how to engage with professional contexts, and even involves contributing to organising a conference event — giving you a taste of the business side of screenwriting.

  • Understanding industry‑relevant scriptwriting for various media & formats: The course doesn’t limit you to a single medium: you’ll study screenwriting for film and continuing series — so you learn to write for both features and episodic television, adapting your style accordingly.

  • Strong foundation in theory + context + practical craft: Through lectures, seminars, screenings, writing exercises and self‑directed work you’ll gain a good grounding in key concepts of screenwriting — story structure, genre conventions, media context, and how to situate your creative voice in the industry world.
