1 Years On Campus Masters Program
The Master of Science in Architectural Research and Design (M.S.ARC) at Tulane University is a one-year, post-professional degree designed for architects with an accredited professional architecture degree who want to pursue advanced research, teaching, and academic careers in architecture and related fields. Students develop specialized expertise through advanced studio research, architectural research methods, thesis work, and electives, with opportunities to shape their studies around a chosen area of inquiry.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1: Students begin with ARCH 6130 Architectural Research Methods, ARCH 6980 Thesis Research, and ARCH 6051 Advanced Studio Elective / Research, developing advanced research skills while establishing the foundation for their thesis. In the spring, ARCH 6925 Independent Thesis Research and ARCH 6990 Thesis Studio allow students to develop and complete their research and design thesis, supported by three 6000-level architecture electives; the program totals 30 credit hours.
Focus areas: Advanced Fabrication and Design, Building Technologies, Design/Build, Design and Social Engagement, Representation Theory, River and Coastal Urbanism (Climate Change Adaptation).
Learning outcomes: Students develop advanced architectural research, independent scholarship, design-research expertise, thesis development, research methods, and specialized knowledge relevant to architecture and the built environment, preparing them particularly for teaching and research careers.
Professional alignment: The M.S.ARC is a post-professional, non-licensure degree and is not a professional NAAB-accredited architecture degree; Tulane specifically states that the program does not provide a professional degree leading to licensure. However, the program is classified under Architectural and Building Sciences/Technology (CIP 04.0902) and is eligible for the STEM OPT extension, allowing qualifying international graduates to remain in the U.S. for up to 36 months for practical training.
Reputation (Employability Rankings)
Reputation: Tulane’s School of Architecture has demonstrated national recognition, with its graduate architecture program ranked No. 31 in DesignIntelligence’s 2018–2019 America’s Top Ranked Architecture & Design Schools survey, which incorporated feedback from more than 6,000 industry hiring professionals. More recently, four Tulane architecture students were selected for the 2026 Metropolis Future100, recognizing the top 100 graduating architecture and interior design students in the United States and Canada.
Students in Tulane University’s M.S.ARC gain practical research and design experience through advanced research studios, thesis work, fabrication, prototyping, and specialized inquiry. The program’s facilities support both digital and physical experimentation, while the school’s research studios allow graduate students to work with emerging materials, computational design, robotic fabrication, and full-scale architectural prototypes. Students can connect research with hands-on making through facilities such as the Fabrication Labs, Digital Ceramics Lab, and the Mintz Computer Classroom, while architecture and built-environment library resources support deeper academic investigation.
Students can develop these practical skills through:
The Master of Science in Architectural Research and Design (M.S.ARC) is designed for architects who want to move beyond professional practice into advanced research, teaching, and design scholarship. Its post-professional structure, thesis emphasis, research studios, and specialized concentrations can prepare graduates for academic careers and research-driven roles across architecture and the wider built environment.
Career opportunities: Architecture researcher, university/architecture educator, design researcher, research-based architectural practitioner
Employment support and opportunities:
Further Academic Progression: Graduates can continue toward doctoral-level research and academic careers, particularly in architecture, urbanism, design research, or related built-environment disciplines. Tulane's own faculty demonstrate this research pathway, including faculty with PhDs in architecture and faculty pursuing doctoral research in areas such as city, culture, and community.
