MS in Bioinformatics

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Virginia Commonwealth University

Program Overview

It is an advanced degree in the relatively new field of bioinformatics, a cross-disciplinary field that has arisen as a separate discipline within molecular biology. Bioinformatics applies computer science, engineering, mathematics and statistics to research and interpret biological data, similar to what was done during the Human Genome Project. At its most basic, bioinformatics applies information technology to biological molecular data on a large scale. Students who choose this course of study will gain skills in the interpretation of biological data at the molecular level, as well as skills in database organization. The application of advanced math and information technology to this data allow the researcher to understand data relationships in a way that was previously not available.
