Program Overview

The Master of Arts in Teaching degree program is designed for two categories of applicants. Applicants in Category one are those students who hold a baccalaureate degree in a field other than teacher education, with a major in an area not taught in grades K12. Examples of such majors are: criminal justice and social welfare. Applicants in Category two are those students who hold a baccalaureate degree in a field other than teacher education, but have a major in an area taught in K12 schools. Such majors include art, English, health, mathematics, science, social studies, speech pathology and audiology, physical education, and foreign language. However, regardless of the student s academic major at the bachelor s degree level, he/ she is free to pursue any option in the MAT program. The Master of Arts in Teaching degree program has been developed according to Standards for Program Approval by the South Carolina Department of Education. Additionally, it meets all of the requirements for initial certification in the specified options, and it provides the knowledge base and develops the competencies needed by program graduates to fulfill the teaching roles for which they are to be prepared.
