Masters in Aeronautics

2 Year On Campus Masters Program

California Institute of Technology

Program Overview

Caltech’s Master of Science in Aeronautics is a one-year graduate program designed for students who want to deepen their understanding of aerospace science through advanced engineering coursework and rigorous analytical, computational, and experimental methods. Ideal for graduates with a strong background in mathematics, physics, and engineering, the program offers focused study in areas such as fluid mechanics, structural mechanics, autonomy and control, and experimental methods, preparing students for technically demanding careers in aerospace and related fields.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1

The program is completed within one year and requires at least 135 academic units, including a minimum of 81 units from the Aeronautics curriculum tracks. Students select advanced coursework in Fluid Mechanics (Ae/APh/CE/ME 101abc), Solid/Structural Mechanics (Ae/AM/CE/ME 102abc), or Autonomy and Control (Ae 103a, Ae 103b, and an approved third course), alongside Experimental Methods (Ae 104abc). They also complete mathematics coursework suited to their chosen track, attend the Aerospace Engineering Seminar (Ae 150abc), and choose electives with their adviser’s approval.

Year 2

There is no second year in the standard master’s program, as all degree requirements must be completed within the first year. Students who wish to continue toward a PhD may apply for further graduate study, which involves additional advanced coursework, a qualifying examination, and supervised research.

Focus Areas

Fluid Mechanics and Aerodynamics, Solid and Structural Mechanics, Autonomy and Control of Aerospace Systems, Experimental Methods, Computational and Theoretical Fluid Dynamics, Computational Solid Mechanics, Aeronautical Engineering and Propulsion, and Mechanics of Materials.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates develop advanced knowledge of aeronautical science and engineering, strengthen their ability to analyze complex fluid and structural systems, and apply mathematical and computational techniques to engineering challenges. The program also builds a foundation in experimental methods, technical problem-solving, and the evaluation of aerospace systems, supporting further study or professional work in aerospace-related fields.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

Caltech is institutionally accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). The Aeronautics master's program emphasizes advanced technical knowledge and analytical, computational, and experimental methods relevant to aerospace engineering. The university's institutional accreditation should not be interpreted as separate program-specific accreditation for this master's degree.

Reputation (Employability Rankings)

Caltech has a strong international reputation for science, engineering, and research. The university ranked 10th in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and 7th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. Its aerospace department highlights graduates pursuing careers in academia, national laboratories, and other technical fields, giving students access to an academically rigorous environment suited to advanced engineering and research careers. These are university-wide rankings, not rankings specifically for the Aeronautics master's program.
