Aerospace Engineering, M.S.

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Oklahoma

Program Overview

The Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Oklahoma is designed for students who want to deepen their knowledge of aerospace technology, engineering analysis, and advanced research. Offered through the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering in the Gallogly College of Engineering, the program provides thesis and non-thesis options and supports specialization in areas such as aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, composites, and structures, making it a strong choice for students aiming to pursue technical careers in aerospace engineering or prepare for doctoral studies.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum offers two pathways to suit different academic and professional goals. The thesis option requires a minimum of 30 credit hours, including 24 hours of graduate coursework and 6 hours of master's thesis research, while the non-thesis option requires 36 credit hours of graduate coursework. Students must complete advanced Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering courses and graduate-level mathematics or advanced engineering analysis, with additional approved courses available from related engineering, physical science, and mathematics fields.

Year 1

During the first year, students can build a foundation in advanced aerospace engineering through graduate-level coursework selected to match their chosen concentration. Depending on course availability and their study plan, students may focus on topics connected to aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, composite materials, and aerospace structures, while strengthening their mathematical and engineering analysis skills. The program allows approved graduate courses from related fields, enabling students to develop the technical background needed for advanced aerospace applications.

Year 2

In the second year, students can advance their expertise through specialized graduate coursework and, for thesis students, supervised research under the guidance of a faculty adviser. Relevant subjects taught by the school's faculty include Turbulence, Viscous Fluid Flow, and Advanced Aerospace Structures, which relate to aerodynamic flow behaviour, fluid mechanics, and the analysis of aerospace structural systems. Thesis students complete AME 5980 (Research for Master's Thesis) and defend their research, while non-thesis students complete their coursework and a comprehensive examination. The actual course sequence depends on the student's concentration and approved plan of study.

Focus Areas

The program offers five concentration options:

  • Aerodynamics

  • Aerospace Engineering General

  • Composites

  • Fluid Mechanics

  • Structures

These concentrations allow students to align their studies with their interests in aerodynamic performance, fluid behaviour, advanced materials, and aerospace structural design.

Learning Outcomes

Students develop advanced engineering analysis skills and deepen their understanding of aerospace engineering principles through graduate coursework and, where applicable, research. The program supports the ability to investigate complex engineering problems, apply mathematical and scientific methods, and specialize in areas such as aerodynamics, fluid mechanics, composites, and structures. Thesis students gain additional research experience and must successfully defend their thesis, while non-thesis students demonstrate their knowledge through a comprehensive examination.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The University of Oklahoma is institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The university's official aerospace engineering accreditation information specifically identifies the Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering as ABET-accredited; it does not establish separate ABET accreditation for the Master of Science program. Students should therefore distinguish institutional accreditation from program-specific professional accreditation when evaluating the degree.

Reputation and Employability Rankings

The University of Oklahoma has a strong engineering education and research environment through its Gallogly College of Engineering. In a university announcement dated June 18, 2024, OU reported that its overall graduate engineering programs ranked 106th nationally in the U.S. News & World Report rankings, improving from 110th the previous year. This ranking applies to graduate engineering overall and should not be interpreted as a specific ranking for the Aerospace Engineering M.S. program.

The degree can prepare graduates for technical opportunities in aerospace engineering, research and development, fluid mechanics, structural analysis, and advanced materials. The university describes its thesis pathway as particularly suitable for students pursuing research and development careers in industry or government, as well as those planning further graduate study. Actual employment opportunities depend on each student's experience, specialization, and career goals.
