2 Years On Campus Masters Program
The Master of Science in Civil Engineering at Texas Tech University provides advanced technical education and research opportunities across major civil engineering disciplines. Students can specialize in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering, water resources engineering, or construction engineering and management, preparing for professional careers and advanced research.
Curriculum Structure
Year 1: Students develop advanced technical knowledge through graduate-level coursework in their selected specialization. Depending on their area, they explore subjects related to structural engineering and mechanics, geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, environmental systems, water resources, transportation, or construction management.
Year 2: Students complete their specialization coursework and choose one of three degree pathways. The thesis option includes 24 credit hours of coursework and 6 credit hours of independent research, while the non-thesis options require either 27 coursework credits and 3 credits of CE 6330 – Master's Report, or 30 coursework credits. Non-thesis students must also pass a department-administered comprehensive examination.
Note: Texas Tech does not prescribe a fixed year-wise course sequence; coursework depends on the selected specialization and degree option.
Focus Areas
Structural Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, Geoenvironmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Wind Engineering, Computational Mechanics, Transportation Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management.
Learning Outcomes
Apply advanced civil engineering principles, analyse complex engineering systems, develop infrastructure design solutions, evaluate environmental and geotechnical challenges, understand water resources systems, conduct independent research, prepare technical reports, and solve advanced civil engineering problems.
