MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering: Research

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Wisconsin Madison

Program Overview

The Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering (Research) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison is a research-oriented graduate program designed for students seeking advanced engineering knowledge and independent research experience. Students can explore areas such as Construction Engineering and Management, Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical and Pavement Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Water Resources Engineering, preparing for specialized technical careers and further doctoral studies.

Curriculum Structure

The program requires 30 graduate credits and typically takes approximately two years. Students choose between a thesis pathway and an advanced independent study pathway, developing their curriculum in consultation with a faculty advisor.

Year 1: Students establish advanced technical foundations through specialized coursework and research seminars. Depending on their chosen area, courses may include Research Methods in Construction Engineering Management, Geotechnical Engineering Seminar, Seminar in Structural Engineering, and Seminar in Environmental Engineering. Students also develop their research interests and prepare their individual study plan.

Year 2: Students deepen their specialization through advanced electives and independent research. Thesis students complete at least 6 credits of CIV ENGR 790: Master's Research or Thesis and defend their research before a faculty committee. Independent study students complete a written research report through CIV ENGR 999: Advanced Independent Study, which is reviewed and approved by a faculty committee.

Focus Areas

Construction Engineering, Materials and Management, Environmental Engineering and Science, Geotechnical and Pavement Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Water Resources Engineering and Science.
