2 Years On Campus Masters Program
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Master of Science in Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering is a research-focused graduate degree designed for students who want to deepen their engineering expertise, prepare for advanced technical careers, or explore doctoral study. Through specialized coursework and an independent thesis, students can focus on areas such as mechanical design and materials, aerospace structures and propulsion, or nuclear systems and radiation technologies.
Curriculum Structure
Note: The M.S. does not prescribe a fixed first-year/second-year course sequence on the official program page. Students complete 30 credits, including 6 thesis credits, and choose graduate-level courses with their faculty adviser based on their research interests. The following is a description of possible study themes, not a mandatory year-by-year curriculum.
Coursework and Research Preparation: Students select advanced courses related to their chosen field and build the technical foundation for their thesis. Depending on their interests, relevant subject areas may include Mechanics and Materials, Thermal and Fluids Engineering, Dynamics and Control, or aerospace topics such as Fluid Dynamics/Aerodynamics and Combustion/Propulsion.
Thesis Research and Completion: Students work with a faculty adviser to define a research topic, complete their thesis, and defend it before their adviser and two additional departmental faculty members. Research may connect with subjects such as advanced materials, spacecraft dynamics, reactor engineering, radiation measurement, or computational modelling, depending on the student's selected area and available supervision.
Focus Areas: Mechanical design and manufacturing; mechanics and materials; thermal and fluids engineering; dynamics and control; aerospace structures and materials; aerodynamics and propulsion; spacecraft dynamics and space systems; reactor physics and engineering; nuclear materials; radiation detection and protection; computational modelling and simulation.
Learning Outcomes: Develop advanced engineering knowledge in a chosen specialization; evaluate complex technical problems using analytical and computational approaches; conduct independent research; interpret and communicate research findings; and demonstrate the ability to develop and defend a graduate thesis.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation): The M.S. is a graduate engineering degree with a research thesis. The official program pages reviewed do not identify a separate ABET accreditation for this specific M.S. program, so avoid describing the master's degree as ABET-accredited unless RPI confirms that status.
Reputation (Employability Rankings): RPI provides university-wide graduate outcome information and career resources, but an official employability ranking specific to this M.S. program was not identified. The university’s Department of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Nuclear Engineering highlights its established research programs and collaborations across engineering fields.
At RPI, students can connect advanced engineering theory with hands-on research through faculty-supervised thesis work and access to specialized research facilities. The department's facilities support work in areas ranging from computational engineering and aerodynamic flow control to nuclear measurement, radiation technologies, and simulated nuclear power operations. The exact facilities and research opportunities available to an individual student depend on their specialization and project.
Students can build practical and research skills through the following opportunities:
Thesis Research: Complete an independent research thesis under a faculty adviser and defend it before a departmental committee.
Gaerttner Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Facility: Explore nuclear engineering research involving neutron and photon production, radiation effects in electronics, nuclear measurements, and materials testing.
NuScale Energy Exploration Center: Engage with simulated nuclear power plant scenarios in a control-room environment, using computer modelling to explore small modular reactor operations.
Scientific Computation Research Center (SCOREC): Connect with research in computational simulation and modelling of physical and engineering systems.
Center for Flow Physics and Control (CeFPaC): Explore research related to fluid dynamics, flow prediction, modelling, and control, relevant to aerospace and mechanical engineering.
Center for Computational Innovation (CCI): Access a research environment focused on high-performance computing and data analytics. RPI identifies industry collaborators including IBM, Boeing, GlobalFoundries, Intel, and Xerox.
Research Groups and Professional Societies: Students may connect with the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Nuclear Society through departmental activities and student sections. These offer opportunities to engage with technical presentations, professional networks, and discipline-related activities.
This M.S. can prepare graduates for technical and research-oriented roles across mechanical engineering, aerospace, nuclear technology, advanced materials, and computational engineering. Its combination of advanced coursework and independent thesis research is also useful for students who want to progress to doctoral study or careers involving engineering analysis, product development, simulation, and research.
Potential Career Roles Include:
Mechanical Design or Development Engineer
Aerospace Engineer or Propulsion Research Engineer
Nuclear Engineer or Radiation Protection Specialist
Computational Engineering or Research Engineer
These are potential career paths aligned with the department's research areas, not guaranteed job placements.
Career Development and Employment Support:
Career Counselling: RPI's Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) provides graduate students with individual career counselling, help preparing resumes and CVs, interview preparation, job-search guidance, networking advice, and support with offer negotiation.
Internships and Job Opportunities: Through Handshake, students can search for full-time roles, internships, fellowships, and research opportunities, as well as register for career fairs, employer events, and workshops.
Graduate-Specific Career Resources: Master's students have access to Beyond Graduate School, which offers self-paced career training, webinars, and resources for navigating the job market.
University-Wide Outcomes: RPI reported that, among 1,074 entries in its Class of 2024 graduate outcomes survey, 53% were employed, 36% were attending graduate or professional school, 2% entered the military, 2% reported other outcomes, and 7% were seeking employment. These figures cover RPI university-wide respondents and are not specific to this M.S. program.
Industry Connections: Through the Center for Computational Innovation, RPI identifies IBM, Boeing, GlobalFoundries, Intel, and Xerox among its industry collaborators. This creates a broader research and innovation environment, but it does not guarantee employment or direct placement with those organizations.
Salary Information: RPI publishes starting-salary reports and hiring statistics. However, a current salary figure specific to graduates of this M.S. was not verified, so a program-specific salary should not be stated without further evidence.
Professional Accreditation Value: The degree provides advanced research training, but the official sources reviewed do not confirm separate ABET accreditation for this specific M.S. Students interested in regulated engineering roles should check the relevant employer and professional licensing requirements.
Graduation Outcomes: Graduates can pursue engineering employment, applied research, or further academic study. The program's thesis component provides experience in defining a research problem, conducting independent investigation, and presenting technical findings—skills relevant to both industry research teams and doctoral applications.
Further Academic Progression: After completing the M.S., students who wish to continue into advanced research can consider a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related nuclear engineering and science field, subject to the destination program's admission requirements. RPI itself offers doctoral study in mechanical and aerospace engineering and nuclear engineering and science, providing a possible route for students who want to develop a deeper research specialization.
