12 Months On Campus Masters Program
Northwestern University’s Master of Science in Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) at the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications prepares students to develop strategic, data-informed marketing campaigns that connect brands with audiences across multiple channels. The programme combines marketing strategy, consumer insights, analytics, creative thinking and communication planning, helping students build the skills to lead marketing initiatives in a fast-changing business environment.
Curriculum Structure
The full-time programme follows an accelerated 12-month structure across four academic quarters, beginning in September. Rather than following a traditional year-by-year curriculum, students build their expertise through core courses, specialised sequences and practical projects.
Core Courses: Students develop a strong foundation through subjects such as Consumer Insight, Marketing Research, Financial Accounting, Marketing Strategy and IMC Strategic Process. These courses introduce consumer behaviour, research methods, business performance and the strategic planning of marketing communications.
Specialised Sequences: Students choose courses from four main areas: Consumer Insight and Analytics, Brand Strategy, Strategic Communications and Media. Examples include Brand Management Foundations, Digital Marketing Activation, Strategic Communications Foundations, Media Foundations, Data Science Foundations, Marketing Models I, Machine Learning II and Data Storytelling.
Electives and Capstone: Students can broaden their knowledge through electives such as Social Networks, Culture and Inclusion in Marketing and Marketing Metrics. In the final quarter, they complete capstone projects that bring together their learning to develop integrated marketing strategies for real-world business challenges.
Focus Areas
Consumer behaviour and insights, marketing research, data analytics, brand management, brand positioning, digital marketing, strategic communications, public relations, media planning, advertising, customer engagement, marketing strategy, campaign development, marketing performance measurement and integrated brand communication.
Learning Outcomes
Graduates develop the ability to analyse consumer behaviour, interpret marketing data and identify opportunities for brand growth. They learn to create integrated marketing strategies, develop effective brand messages, select suitable communication channels, manage customer relationships and evaluate campaign performance. The programme also strengthens their strategic thinking, problem-solving, collaboration and communication skills, preparing them to make informed marketing decisions in different business environments.
Experiential Learning
Students gain practical experience through collaborative projects, industry engagement and hands-on learning opportunities. The final-quarter capstone allows them to work on marketing challenges for leading companies, combining consumer insights, data analysis and strategic planning to develop measurable solutions. These experiences help students connect classroom learning with professional marketing practice.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation)
The programme is STEM-designated under the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) code 09.0702. This designation reflects its integration of analytical, research and data-driven approaches to marketing. Eligible international students on F-1 visas may qualify for the 24-month STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT) extension, subject to applicable requirements.
