The Department of Immunology & Microbial Disease emphasizes the study of infectious disease pathogenesis and protection. The emergence of new pathogens, the increasing development of drug resistance, and the threat of bioterrorism have combined to create an increased demand for investigations into disease mechanisms. Specialized research areas within the department include immunology, vaccines, and microbial pathogenesis. Our faculty study host-pathogen interactions of infectious agents such as Aspergillus, Yersinia pestis, hepatitis B, tick-borne bacteria, HIV-1, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Zika, and pneumococci.
