MSOE is a leader in the field of perfusion education. We have been educating perfusionists since 1983 and started the first master’s degree program in 1993. MSOE’s accredited master’s degree in perfusion program emphasizes clinical exposure and courses focused on health sciences, statistics and research study interpretation.

Students in the perfusion program will see a wide variety of cases, which may include implantation of Ventricular Assist Devices, transplant procedures and procedures using ECMO (extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation). Students act as the primary perfusionist in over 100 cases—all in the Milwaukee area—including a strong pediatric experience. Simulation will also be used to prepare students. Research and statistical techniques are also core to the program, which are critical for completing research projects and understanding scientific literature.

Applicants must have earned a baccalaureate degree with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.00 scale). At least one undergraduate course in each of the following areas: physiology (or anatomy and physiology), chemistry, mathematics and physics. Recommended course work includes biochemistry and statistics. GRE general test scores having percentiles that average 50 percent or better. Three letters of recommendation, if possible, two should be from faculty who can judge the applicant’s academic abilities. The third may be from a faculty member or a supervisor/employer who can speak to the applicant’s professionalism, ability to work on a team, be responsible, etc. A demonstrated understanding of the clinical aspects of being a perfusionist. This may be demonstrated through thorough research of the field, speaking with perfusionists, or observing surgical cases that utilize perfusion (preferred if possible). Applicants should note in their essay the type of exposure they have had to the perfusion field. A criminal background check and urine drug screen will be conducted for all students entering the program.

IELTS Score of 7.0 overall with no less than 6.0 in each section. A composite score of 90 must be obtained on the TOEFL, and each band score must at least 21 or higher.

The clinical perfusionist is involved in cardiopulmonary bypass, patient monitoring, blood conservation (cell salvage, modified ultrafiltration and plasmapharesis), intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP), ventricular assist devices (VAD), total artificial heart placement (TAH), selection of equipment and biomaterials, extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), etc. In addition to a variety of administrative duties, the perfusionist may be responsible for a number of educational and research functions.
