Program Overview

This course reviews legal issues specific for the Arctic region with focus on the following six areas: 1) Arctic governance (ex: the Arctic Council), 2) the regulation of oil and gas exploration and production in the Arctic, 3) Arctic shipping with a specific focus on the North East Passage and the North West Passage, 4) maritime boundaries in the Arctic (ex: extensions of the continental shelf and the role of the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf), 5) climate change in the Arctic, and 6) indigenous people s rights in the Arctic. This course will be taught by Dr. Svendsen, who currently serves as a visiting scholar at Tulane and a post-doctoral fellow at the Arctic University of Norway.
