Program Overview

This course examines the immigration laws of the United States, including the administrative and regulatory framework of the United States agencies charged with enforcing and administering immigration laws. Topics include the power of the Congress to regulate immigration; the effect of politics on immigration policy; nonimmigrant and immigrant visa classifications and processing; humanitarian protections including asylum; the effect of criminal acts on immigration status and immigrant detention; grounds of removal from the United States; relief from deportation; the rights of child migrants; immigration court representation; and the law of naturalization and citizenship. (3 credits).
