Program Overview

This mini-course examines the history, cultural background, and current state of Japanese Law. After a brief study of the comparative legal methods of Hozumi Nobushige and John Henry Wigmore, this course will focus on specific topics with reference to the laws of the United States and other countries. Topics will include legal consciousness of contract, good faith, civil code reform, judicial review, renunciation of war (Article 9 of the Constitution), and lay judges in criminal courts. This course is taught by Professor Tatsuya Kitai from Chuo University, Tokyo.
