The M.A. in Geography degree is designed to give students a professional grasp of the concepts and techniques of geography. The M.A. degree can be completed with or without a thesis. The thesis option is ideal for students considering a Ph.D. at a later date. The thesis option requires 30 semester hours of graduate credit. Coursework requirements include satisfactory completion of Contemporary Geographical Thought (6973); Research and Writing in Geography (6953); two graduate-only seminars offered by the Department, and a minimum of four hours and no more than six hours of thesis credit. In addition, the student must write a thesis acceptable to the advisory committee and defend it orally. The non-thesis option requires a total of 36 semester hours of graduate credit. Coursework requirements include satisfactory completion of Contemporary Geographical Thought (6973); Research and Writing in Geography (6953); and two graduate-only seminars offered by the Department. In addition, the student must pass a comprehensive final examination. Admission to the M.A. program requires a completed bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university with an undergraduate grade-point average of at least 3.0 or equivalent. An applicant must submit results from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), a resume or c.v., a statement of research interests that shows how the applicant s goals and interests match current faculty expertise, and two letters of recommendation from professors with whom the applicant has worked. Applicants must also submit writing samples. International applicants whose first language is not English must submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and must meet the TOEFL requirements of the Graduate College.
