Master of Science in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Pennsylvania State University University Park

Program Overview

The Master of Science in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology at Penn State provides advanced research training in biochemical processes, microbial systems and molecular mechanisms. The program develops expertise in genetics, genomics, microbiology and cellular biology, preparing students for scientific research, biotechnology and pharmaceutical careers; however, students are admitted with the intention of pursuing a PhD, and the university does not accept applications for a standalone terminal master's degree.

Curriculum Structure

The MS requires at least 30 credits, including 18 credits at the 500 and 600 levels combined, and a research thesis.

Year 1:

Students develop advanced knowledge through Advances in Biochemistry (BMMB 581), Advances in Genetics and Genomics (BMMB 582) and Critical Analysis of the Biochemical, Microbial, and Molecular Biology Scientific Literature (BMMB 502). They also study Ethics in Biomedical Science (BMMB 509) and Foundations of Teaching in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology (BMMB 801).

Year 2:

Students concentrate on independent research through Thesis Research (BMMB 600), completing at least six research credits. They conduct experiments, analyse scientific findings, prepare their thesis and successfully defend their research before the relevant committee.

Focus Areas

Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Genomics, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Virology, Proteomics, Metabolomics, Antibiotic Discovery, Molecular Genetics.

Learning Outcomes

Apply biochemical and molecular biology principles, critically evaluate scientific literature, design and conduct rigorous experiments, analyse genetic and genomic data, practise responsible research, collaborate across scientific disciplines, communicate research findings and develop effective teaching skills.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

No separate professional accreditation is specified for this program. The curriculum emphasizes scientific research, ethical laboratory practices, experimental reproducibility and teaching preparation.

Reputation (Employability)

Penn State offers interdisciplinary research opportunities across antibiotic discovery, genomics, enzymology, virology, microbiology, cancer biology and structural biology. Students benefit from faculty-led research and laboratory training, preparing them for careers in academic research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and biomedical science. Program-specific employment statistics are not stated.
