MPH Concentration in Biostatistics

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

University of Illinois Chicago

Program Overview

The MPH in Biostatistics prepares students to apply statistical methods to public health, medicine and biological research. The program develops skills in managing, analysing and interpreting health data, with applications in government, pharmaceutical companies, academic research and public health organisations.

Curriculum Structure

The program is designed for two years of full-time study and is also available part-time. The university's curriculum is organised around school-wide public health courses, biostatistics and epidemiology requirements, and electives rather than a fixed year-wise course sequence.

First Year:

Students build their public health and quantitative foundations through courses such as Foundations and Determinants of Public Health, Public Health Policy, Systems and Advocacy, Quantitative Methods and Analysis I, Biostatistics II and An Intro to Data Analysis with R.

Second Year:

Students develop advanced analytical and research skills through Logistic Regression and Survival Analysis, Design of Clinical Trials, Intermediate Epidemiologic Methods and Epidemiological Computing. They also complete an Applied Practice Experience, an Integrative Learning Experience and elective coursework.

Focus Areas

  • Biostatistical Methods: Statistical analysis and interpretation of public health data.

  • Clinical Research: Clinical trial design and evaluation of medical therapies.

  • Epidemiological Analysis: Statistical methods for studying disease patterns and population health.

  • Health Data Analysis: Data management, statistical computing and interpretation.

  • Public Health Research: Applying quantitative methods to healthcare and biological research.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates develop the ability to design studies, manage health datasets, apply statistical techniques, analyse clinical and epidemiological data, interpret research findings and communicate evidence to public health professionals.
