University of Illinois Chicago

Program Overview

The MS in Biomedical Visualization combines art, life sciences and technology to prepare students to communicate complex medical and scientific concepts through visual media. The program develops expertise in medical illustration, animation, 3D modelling, interactive media, virtual reality and augmented reality.

Curriculum Structure

The program requires 49–52 credit hours, with 62–65 credit hours for students pursuing the Anaplastology concentration. The full-time program spans two years and six semesters.

First Year:

Students develop foundations in anatomy, visual communication, biomedical science and digital design. Courses include Gross Human Anatomy, Anatomical Visualization, Graphic Design, Web Development, Visual Learning & Visual Thinking I, Pathophysiology for Biomedical Visualization and Strategic Inquiry for BVIS. Electives include Illustration Techniques, Animation I, Modeling I and Serious Game Development.

Second Year:

Students advance their visualization and clinical knowledge through courses such as Clinical Sciences for BVIS, Business Practices, Modeling II, Animation II, Immersive Interactive Visualization and Advanced Illustration Techniques. They also complete Project Research and further electives, with opportunities for practicum and specialization in areas such as anaplastology.

Focus Areas

  • Medical Illustration: Visual communication of anatomical and medical information.

  • Animation and 3D Modelling: Scientific animation, anatomical modelling and 3D visualisation.

  • Interactive Media: Immersive interactive visualization, haptics and serious game development.

  • Clinical Visualization: Surgical illustration, clinical sciences and patient education.

  • Anaplastology: Patient-specific restorative prostheses and related clinical visualization technologies.

Learning Outcomes

Graduates develop skills in anatomical and scientific illustration, 3D modelling, animation, interactive visualization, visual storytelling, clinical communication, research and professional project management.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation)

The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Its continuing accreditation was awarded in January 2025 through 2032. Graduates may also pursue Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI) status through the Association of Medical Illustrators, which requires a written examination and portfolio review.
