MS in Biological Sciences

3 Year On Campus Masters Program

University of South Carolina

Program Overview

The MS in Biological Sciences at the University of South Carolina provides advanced research training across molecular, cellular, organismal and environmental biology. Students can specialise in areas such as cancer biology, neuroscience, ecology, evolution, plant biology and developmental biology, developing the scientific and analytical skills needed for careers in research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and environmental science.

Curriculum Structure

The programme requires at least 30 graduate credit hours and follows a research-based thesis pathway. Students develop an individual study plan with their major professor and advisory committee.

Year 1 – Research Foundations and Specialisation:

Students select graduate coursework aligned with their research interests and develop in-depth knowledge of their chosen biological field. They identify a major professor, establish an advisory committee, prepare a research proposal and complete a qualifying examination involving a written and oral research plan.

Years 2–3 – Advanced Research and Thesis:

Students continue specialised coursework and conduct independent research under faculty supervision. They complete BIOL 798 (Research) and BIOL 799 (Thesis), prepare a research-based thesis and defend their findings orally as part of the comprehensive examination.

Focus Areas:

Stem Cell and Developmental Biology, Neurobiology, Cancer Biology, Biology of Cellular Stress, Plant Biology, Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, Marine Biology.

Learning Outcomes:

Develop specialised biological knowledge, critically evaluate scientific literature, design independent research projects, apply appropriate laboratory and research methodologies, analyse experimental data, communicate scientific findings, develop scientific writing and presentation skills, gain teaching and research experience.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation):

The programme emphasises research-based scientific training, teaching experience and thesis preparation. Students are required to complete one semester of teaching or instructional assistant experience unless waived. No separate professional accreditation is specified.

Reputation (Employability):

All MS students receive financial support and benefit from opportunities to teach, present research and publish scientific findings. Alumni have progressed into positions such as Senior Research Associate, Lab Supervisor, Research Specialist, Adjunct Professor and Senior Data Scientist. Employers include St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, CRISPR Therapeutics and Nephron Pharmaceuticals.
