2 Years On Campus Masters Program
The MS in Comparative Biomedical Sciences at the University of Wisconsin–Madison provides interdisciplinary training in animal and human health through molecular, cellular and whole-organism research. The programme is suitable for students interested in biomedical research, immunology, neuroscience, infectious diseases, pharmacology and veterinary science, combining advanced scientific coursework with original research and faculty mentorship.
Curriculum Structure
The programme requires 30 graduate credits, including at least 9 didactic credits and a minimum of 19 research credits. Students complete a thesis or an approved substantial research paper.
Year 1 – Biomedical Science Foundations:
Students build knowledge in genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology and cellular processes. Relevant courses include Principles of Genetics (GENETICS 466), Introduction to Biochemistry (BIOCHEM 501) and Prokaryotic Molecular Biology (BIOCHEM/GENETICS/MICROBIO 612). Students also begin research planning and participate in advanced seminars.
Year 2 – Specialisation and Research:
Students develop expertise in their chosen area through courses such as Veterinary Immunology (PATH-BIO 510), Veterinary Virology (PATH-BIO 513), Neurobiology (ZOOLOGY/PSYCH 523) and Veterinary Toxicology (COMP BIO 555). They complete original research, prepare a thesis or substantial research paper, and present and defend their findings before a committee.
Focus Areas:
Immunology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Genomics, Oncology, Virology, Infectious Diseases, Toxicology, Pharmacology, Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Research.
Learning Outcomes:
Apply advanced biomedical research methods, analyse molecular and cellular processes, evaluate scientific literature, design and conduct independent research, interpret experimental data, understand disease mechanisms, follow ethical research practices and communicate scientific findings effectively.
Professional Alignment (Accreditation):
The programme provides interdisciplinary research training through the School of Veterinary Medicine and collaborating departments across the university. No separate professional accreditation is specified for this degree.
Reputation (Employability):
The programme has more than 100 faculty trainers across multiple academic departments and research disciplines.
