MS in Biology

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Georgia Institute of Technology

Program Overview

The Master of Science in Biology at Georgia Tech offers advanced training in biological sciences through two pathways: a thesis-based option for students seeking independent research experience and a non-thesis option for those pursuing advanced biological knowledge for professional careers. Students can specialize in areas such as molecular and cell biology, ecology and evolution, and computational biology.

Curriculum Structure

Both pathways require 36 credit hours, with different coursework and research requirements. The university does not prescribe one fixed year-wise sequence for all students.

Year 1:

Students begin graduate-level Biology coursework (BIOL 6000–9000) and other approved graduate courses. They also take Biology seminars and may undertake supervised research through Special Problems – Research (BIOL 890X).

Year 2:

Thesis students continue faculty-supervised research and complete BIOL 7000 – Master's Thesis, alongside their remaining coursework and seminars. Non-thesis students complete their coursework, research-related requirements and assessment of biological knowledge.

Degree requirements:

  • Thesis option: 12 credits of graduate Biology courses, 9 thesis credits, 7 Special Problems – Research credits, 2 seminar credits and 6 credits of other Biology courses.

  • Non-thesis option: 15 credits of graduate Biology courses, 9 credits of other graduate courses, 6 credits of other Biology courses, 4 Special Problems – Research credits and 2 seminar credits.

Focus Areas: Molecular Biology, Ecology, Biotechnology, Genomics, Bioinformatics

Learning Outcomes: Advanced understanding of biological principles, research methodologies, critical thinking, and practical application of biological sciences.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): The program is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), ensuring high educational standards.

Reputation (Employability Rankings): Georgia Tech consistently ranks among the top universities for employability, with QS World University Rankings placing it in the top 50 globally for life sciences and medicine.
