Master of Science in Biology

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Pennsylvania State University University Park

Program Overview

Penn State’s MS in Biology is a research-intensive graduate program offering advanced study across areas such as genetics, ecology, evolution, cell biology, neuroscience and physiology. Students work closely with a faculty adviser to develop an individual course plan, conduct original research and complete a thesis that contributes to biological science.

Curriculum Structure:

First Year:

Students complete core courses including BIOL 590 – Colloquium, BIOL 592 – Critical Evaluation of Literature in Biology, BIOL 400 – Teaching in Biology and BIOL 893 – Experiential Teaching in Biology, alongside research-focused electives.

Second Year:

Students continue specialised coursework and thesis research through BIOL 600 or BIOL 610, complete their research project and defend the thesis before a committee.

Degree Requirements: Minimum 30 credits, including at least 18 credits at the 500 and 600 levels combined, and at least 6 thesis research credits. The program is usually completed within two years.

Focus Areas: Bioinformatics, cell biology, developmental biology, ecology, evolution, genetics, neuroscience, phylogenetics, physiology, molecular evolutionary biology.

Learning Outcomes: Develop comprehensive biological knowledge, apply experimental and computational methods to analyse biological data, formulate and evaluate research hypotheses, communicate scientific findings effectively, and demonstrate ethical research practices.

Professional Alignment/Accreditation: The program requires a research-based thesis and thesis defense. No separate professional accreditation is specified in the university bulletin.
