MS in Biology

2 Years On Campus Masters Program

Tufts University

Program Overview

The MS in Biology at Tufts University is a flexible, course-based graduate program designed for students seeking to advance their knowledge of biological sciences and prepare for careers in academia, biotechnology, healthcare, government, and environmental organizations. Students can customize their studies around their professional interests, with opportunities to explore molecular biology, genetics, marine science, global change biology, and other interdisciplinary fields.

Curriculum Structure

The program requires 30 graduate credits (approximately 10 courses), including at least eight courses worth three or more credits and one advanced seminar. There is no fixed curriculum, and students select courses in consultation with faculty advisors.

Year 1:

Students establish their advanced biological science foundation through graduate-level courses and seminars. Depending on their interests, they can explore Topics in Molecular and Cellular Biology (BIO 243), Graduate Seminar in Evolutionary Ecology (BIO 244), and Topics in Physiology of Animal Behavior (BIO 246).

Year 2:

Students deepen their specialization through advanced electives selected from Biology and other departments, including Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Environmental Studies, and Data Analytics. They can also pursue research opportunities, industry-focused coursework, or a paid cooperative education experience through the Graduate Co-op Program.

Focus Areas: Molecular and cellular biology, genetics, developmental biology, marine science, global change biology, evolutionary ecology, animal behavior, physiology, biotechnology, environmental biology.

Learning Outcomes: Develop advanced biological knowledge, critically evaluate scientific literature, understand biological processes, apply interdisciplinary approaches, strengthen analytical and research skills, interpret scientific findings, communicate scientific information, and prepare for professional careers in biological sciences.

Professional Alignment (Accreditation): The program is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), ensuring high educational standards.

Reputation (Employability Rankings): Tufts University consistently ranks highly in employability, with QS World University Rankings placing it among the top institutions for graduate employability.
