M.S. in Chemistry (thesis option)

1 Years On Campus Masters Program

Michigan Technological University

Program Overview

The M.S. in Chemistry (Thesis Option) at Michigan Technological University is a research-intensive graduate program designed for students who want to deepen their chemistry knowledge while completing original research that culminates in a master’s thesis and oral defense. Students build advanced expertise through graduate-level chemistry coursework and research across areas including medicinal/biochemistry, environmental chemistry, computational chemistry, and materials chemistry, making the program suitable for careers in research, industry, or further doctoral study.

Curriculum Structure

Year 1: Students begin with graduate chemistry coursework selected with guidance from the Graduate Programs Committee, including CH 5130 Professional Development: Chemical Safety and CH 5900 Chemistry Graduate Seminar, while completing additional 5000-level chemistry courses according to their research interests. The thesis option requires 30 credits, comprising 20 course credits and 10 research credits, with at least 12 course credits at the 5000 level or higher.

As students progress through the year, they move increasingly toward independent research under a faculty advisor, developing an original project that forms the basis of the M.S. thesis. The program concludes with a research presentation and oral thesis defense, alongside evidence of mastery of core chemistry concepts through placement examinations and departmental coursework.

Focus areas:

Medicinal/biochemistry, environmental chemistry, computational chemistry, materials chemistry, and interdisciplinary chemistry research.

Learning outcomes:

Advanced chemistry knowledge, independent research capability, scientific problem-solving, research communication, responsible research practices, thesis preparation, scientific presentation, and oral defense skills.

Professional alignment (accreditation):

ACS certification: Michigan Tech states that its B.S. in Chemistry is certified by the American Chemical Society; the official graduate chemistry materials do not state that the M.S. in Chemistry itself carries separate ACS program certification. The M.S. thesis option is instead structured around advanced coursework, original research, thesis preparation, research presentation, and oral defense.

Reputation (employability rankings):

Career outcomes: Michigan Tech reports 92.5% career outcomes for undergraduate and graduate students in its 2024–25 First Destination Survey cycle, while its current university data reports $70,720 five-year median starting salary across undergraduate and graduate students. Michigan Tech also reports a $84,560 median early-career earnings figure and identifies a No. 3 ranking among U.S. public colleges for salary impact/high salaries from The Wall Street Journal. These are university-wide figures rather than M.S. Chemistry-specific outcomes.

Experiential Learning (Research, Projects, Internships etc.)

The M.S. in Chemistry (Thesis Option) at Michigan Technological University is strongly research-oriented, allowing students to work closely with faculty in research groups typically consisting of two to six people. Students can develop practical research skills across areas including environmental, life-process, macromolecular, supramolecular, nano, theoretical, computational, and chemical education research, with access to specialized teaching and research laboratories and advanced analytical equipment.

The thesis pathway gives students the opportunity to undertake original research and produce a master's thesis, supported by Michigan Tech's extensive chemistry infrastructure and interdisciplinary shared facilities. Key practical resources include:

  • Research laboratories: The Chemistry Department occupies more than 40,000 square feet in the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Building, including approximately 16,000 square feet of research laboratories equipped with fume hoods, safety equipment, chemical storage, glassware, and research equipment.
  • Faculty research groups: Graduate students work collaboratively with faculty mentors in small research groups, with research often extending across disciplinary boundaries. Current research areas include chemical catalysis, biomolecular nanoparticles, pathogen invasion, protein misfolding, environmental chemistry, nanochemistry, and computational methods.
  • NMR spectroscopy: The department maintains a 400 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer, providing an important analytical resource for chemical structure and molecular research.
  • Mass spectrometry: Students can work with advanced mass-spectrometry equipment including a Bruker Microflex MALDI-TOF, Thermo-Finnigan LCQ Advantage LC-MS, and Shimadzu 5050A GC-MS for molecular identification and analytical research.
  • Molecular biology tools: Chemistry research facilities include an ABI 394 DNA/RNA synthesizer and equipment for biochemical and molecular research, supporting projects at the chemistry–biology interface.
  • Materials characterization: The Materials Characterization and Fabrication Facility (MCFF) provides access to specialized core laboratories covering mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, X-ray analysis, surface analysis, scanning-probe and optical microscopy, confocal imaging, environmental analysis, and microfabrication.
  • Specialized mass-spectrometry software: The MCFF Mass Spectrometry Core Lab provides MFAssignR, a custom R package used for assigning molecular formulas from ultrahigh-resolution mass-spectrometry measurements.
  • Research data and thesis access: Completed Michigan Tech Chemistry master's theses are preserved in the university's Digital Commons, giving students access to an established repository of previous graduate research and examples of completed chemistry research.
  • Digital research resources: Graduate students have access to campus computing, software downloads, and remote computing resources through Michigan Tech's IT infrastructure, including VPN-supported access to university computing and software.
  • Interdisciplinary facilities: Michigan Tech's shared research infrastructure is available to students and faculty across disciplines, allowing chemistry researchers to use specialized facilities and technical expertise beyond the Department of Chemistry when their thesis projects require it.

Progression & Future Opportunities

The M.S. in Chemistry (Thesis Option) at Michigan Technological University develops advanced research and analytical skills through graduate coursework, research credits, a research seminar, and an oral thesis defense. Graduates can move into scientific and technical roles such as Forensic Scientist, Process Engineer, Environmental Consultant, and Science Research Analyst, while the research-focused structure also provides preparation for further doctoral study.

Career and progression opportunities:

  • Career Services: Michigan Tech Career Services supports students through employer recruiting, career events, job-search resources, and career-outcome information; the university reported 498 employers recruiting, 194 career events, and 5,113 students and alumni engaged during 2025–26.
  • Employment outcomes: Michigan Tech reported 92.5% career outcomes for undergraduate and graduate students in the 2024–25 First Destination Survey cycle, with an 87.8% knowledge rate. The university also reports a $70,720 five-year median starting salary across undergraduate and graduate students for the 2020–25 FDS cycles; this figure is university-wide rather than specific to the M.S. in Chemistry.
  • Industry connections: Chemistry graduates have contributed to companies and government laboratories including Kimberly-Clark, Amgen, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Los Alamos National Laboratory, demonstrating pathways across private-sector research and government science.
  • Internships and external laboratory experience: Michigan Tech Chemistry has policies supporting co-op or internship leaves of absence, allowing graduate students in appropriate circumstances to gain experience in laboratories outside the university.
  • Department employment: Master's students are not offered GTA or GRA support as part of the program, but after arriving on campus they may apply for departmental or other Michigan Tech jobs; preference for department employment is given to students who have completed at least one semester of coursework.
  • Accreditation value: Michigan Tech has been continuously institutionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) since 1928, with its accreditation reaffirmed in 2021 and the next comprehensive reaffirmation scheduled for 2031–32. The university's ACS approval applies to the B.S. in Chemistry, so it should not be presented as separate ACS accreditation of this M.S. thesis degree.
  • Graduate research outcomes: The thesis option requires at least six research credits, a research seminar presentation, and an oral defense, giving students a substantial research portfolio for scientific employment or subsequent doctoral applications. Michigan Tech also maintains an online collection of Chemistry master's theses and dissertations, illustrating the range of research completed by graduate students.

Further Academic Progression: After completing the M.S. thesis, students can pursue a Ph.D. in Chemistry or a related chemical-sciences field, using their thesis research, research credits, seminar experience, and oral defense as preparation for doctoral-level research. Michigan Tech also participates in the ACS Bridge Program, which supports eligible students planning to pursue doctoral degrees in the chemical sciences.
