Program Overview

The PhD program involves courses, a comprehensive exam, and a thesis. It can normally be completed in four years of full-time study. While the Department offers graduate supervision in a variety of areas, most of our recent graduate students have been involved in twentieth-century and contemporary literature and in Canadian literature, including the literature of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Additional Information & Requirements

Master's degree in English with minimum 80% in graduate courses. IELTS: A minimum overall band score of 6.5, with at least a band 6 in reading and writing. TOEFL: A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based test, or 79 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT) with a minimum score of 20 in reading and writing, and not less than 17 in listening and speaking.
