Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. The term was probably coined by Pythagoras.The completion of a PhD is often a requirement for employment as a university professor, researcher, or scientist in many fields. The course-based, two-year program is geared towards students who have decided to pursue a PhD in philosophy, yet currently lack the background or academic record required for entry into the world s best philosophy departments. The department is particularly strong in Ethics, Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Science, and we have expertise in areas of Epistemology and Metaphysics, as well as in History of Early Modern, Analytic Philosophy and Logic. Several faculty members have strong interests in empirical research in Psychology, Neuroscience, and Cognitive Science.
