Seed is the fundamental necessity for germination of a plant or crop. Improper seed selection or nurturing can result in crop failure and economic losses. Hence it becomes important that scientific principles and methodologies are incorporated throughout seed selection, sowing, and nurturing. Seed Science and Technology as a specialized branch of agricultural sciences focuses on the study of structure and development of seeds from the moment of fertilization of the egg cell to the emergence of a new plant from the seed.
